The last national economic indicator to be released this week was announced this morning — University of Michigan consumer sentiment index. Most economists were projecting the index to be between 66.5 and 66. May’s index is slightly higher than projected at 67.9, indicating that consumer confidence in the economy is slowing starting to turnaround (still a long way off the index in the 90’s during a few years ago). Here is a quick summary of the sentiment index  since January 2009:

  • January — 61.2
  • February — 56.3
  • March — 57.3
  • April — 65.1
  • May — 67.9
