The City Café

For those interested in sharing ideas and perspectives regarding local government.

The League maintains a database of municipal financial records dating back to FY1992. This database is an important analytical resource and helps provide a historical comparison of city revenue and expenditures. I recently reviewed the total sales tax revenue from the local option 1% tax from FY1992 through FY2009. We adjusted this total revenue to account for inflation and analyzed it per capita. This chart illustrates how far we have dropped from our recent boom during fiscal year 2007. Adding our forecast for FY2010 (where we still have a few months left) we have dropped 25% in sales tax revenue per capita, from the $101 level in 2007.
