The City Café

For those interested in sharing ideas and perspectives regarding local government.

February sales tax distribution to cities and towns is the largest one month distribution of the year (it reflects the sales made in December).  The recent number indicate a 2.5% drop from the same month last year. Obviously each city and town is slightly different, but most of the large cities are in that range of being down 1 to 3 percent from last year.  However, if adjusted for inflation the February distribution is down around 23% from February 2007. Here’s a review of the state local option distribution for Feb in the last few years (real dollars, adjusted for inflation):

  • $35 million (2003)
  • $36.3 million (2004)
  • $37.6 million (2005)
  • $38.5 million (2006)
  • $40.6 million (2007)
  • $38.6 million (2008)
  • $33.4 million (2009)
  • $31.1 million (2010)
